Good afternoon. My name is Dwayne Verhey, and I am here representing the Lake Waseosa Ratepayers’ Association, c/o 21 Cottage Lane, RR#3, Huntsville. P1H 2J4
I am sure that by now you are all well aware of the importance of Treasure Island to the residents of Lake Waseosa due to it’s impact on the character of the lake as a dominant feature of the landscape. We touched on that in our written submission and I’m sure others here present today will expand on that.
I would like to address some points that arose as further information trickled out to us.

As many of you know, the Town of Huntsville recently received an application to re-zone Treasure Island (the big island in Lake Waseosa) from “Conservation” to “Shoreline Residential” together with a proposed mainland access point on the west side of Lake Waseosa as part of a proposal to build on that island.
Treasure Island is the largest island on Lake Waseosa. Zoned Conservation, it is a contained slice of undeveloped land comprised of 3 parcels. The larger eastern parcel is separated from the smaller western parcel by a narrow strip of public land. A few years ago, the western parcel was sold for back taxes to the owners of the western parcel. They now want to change the zoning to permit development, a move opposed by the vast majority of area residents.

The LWRA has a long history of working with the Canadian Diabetes Association and Camp Huronda to support a sustainable growth while they struggle to meet the demand for this unique facility. We have found this organization to be a responsible corporate partner respecting both the character and ecosystem of the lake.

This property has been the subject of several applications over the past 5 years and has passed through the hands of a series of staff members. The result has been that each successive town planner handling the file has not had the advantage of knowing the history. So that we are all on the same page, let’s have a brief review of that history.
